ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST

A guitar prodigy, Julian Lage debuted on record on Dawg Duos (1999), featuring David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Edgar Meyer, Béla Fleck and more…at age 11!! “Those were my heroes,” Lage marvels. He went on to recruit Fleck for three tracks on his 2009 Grammy nominated album Sounding Point.

Lage’s recent trio appearances with fiddle master Mark O’Connor (also collaborating with the violinist’s group, “Hot Swing”) has strengthened the imprint of Americana and acoustic music on his work. “Working with Mark O’Connor made me realize you can bring that simplicity and elegance of the guitar to the main stage,” says Lage. ” When you’re playing that music on the guitar, it’s as though all the lights are green.”

Other notable collaborations include projects with Nels Cline and Gary Burton. Guitar master-explorer Nels Cline should need no introduction, having held the guitar seat in Wilco for nearly 9 years and counting. His recording and performing career – spanning jazz, rock, punk, and experimental – is well into its fourth decade, with over 130 recordings, including at least 30 for which he is leader. The guitar duo of Nels Cline and Julian Lage features compositions by both players, along with a healthy amount of spontaneous improvisation.

Gary Burton is an inventive vibraphonist whose Jazz Fusion works are legendary. Lage joins Burton in the New Gary Burton Quartet, following the likes of Pat Metheny who was the guitarist in the original Gary Burton Quartet.

Now all of 25, he continues to amaze audiences. An outgrowth of The Julian Lage Group, The Julian Lage Trio performs at Swasey Chapel Saturday February 8, 2014 at 8:00 pm.
